Grounded in its Catholic, Marian, and Filipino identity, and drawing on the sustainable university framework, the University of the Immaculate Conception defines a sustainable UIC through six affirmations, each corresponding to one of the Strategic Sustainability Domains.
Together, these affirmations describe what sustainability looks like in practice at UIC, across governance, teaching, research, community engagement, campus operations, and institutional culture.A sustainable UIC institutionalizes sustainability through governanceA sustainable UIC embeds sustainability into its governance structures, policies, and decision-making, rather than treating it as an optional or peripheral undertaking. Sustainability is directed by a dedicated office, guided by a University Sustainability Policy Manual, and monitored through a continuous Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle.A sustainable UIC equips learners with sustainability competenciesA sustainable UIC integrates sustainability into curriculum, pedagogy, and co-curricular experience across all academic programs, and builds the capacity of its faculty to teach for sustainable development, so that every graduate leaves equipped to address sustainability challenges in their field and their community.A sustainable UIC advances sustainability-oriented research and knowledge creationA sustainable UIC directs a meaningful share of its research agenda toward the social, environmental, and economic sustainability challenges most relevant to Davao Region and the Philippines, and ensures that knowledge generated is disseminated, utilized, and shared through active partnerships and research networks.A sustainable UIC serves as a catalyst for sustainable community developmentA sustainable UIC extends its academic strengths beyond the campus through long-term, impact-based extension services and service-learning, working in strategic partnership with local government units, the Church, non-government organizations, and industry to build community resilience.A sustainable UIC reduces environmental impact and practices responsible resource managementA sustainable UIC actively manages its own environmental footprint — through energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, sustainable procurement, and climate action and resilience planning — treating its campuses as living demonstrations of the practices it teaches.A sustainable UIC fosters a values-driven, inclusive, and caring University culture grounded in sustainabilityA sustainable UIC nurtures ethical formation rooted in Laudato Si' and the RVM pedagogy, promotes equity, inclusion, and wellbeing for its entire community, and sustains campus-wide awareness and advocacy so that sustainability becomes a lived culture rather than an isolated program.
